New Programs for 2014

We are looking forward to 2014 and have some exciting programs that will start in the next few months. For more details on anything listed below, please call (951) 737-3959 or stop by the store.

Saturday Sampler starts the 1st Saturday in January, but you have to sign up before then to guarantee a spot. We will give you your 1st block that 1st Saturday in January. Return the 1st Saturday of the next month with your finished block and we will give you your next block for free. Continue through the year and at the end you will have 12 blocks. The finishing kit is optional and is sold separately.

Civil War Club starts in February and features the Mastering Minatures by Homestead Hearth and fabric by Judie Rothermel. This program is written as a weekly block program featuring 6" blocks. You will receive the fabric and patterns (52 block patterns, with a picture and instructions) for the complete quilt. Our club will not be doing the actual quilt pattern. We will do two projects a quarter using the blocks. Your monthly fee will cover the fabric and pattern to do the projects, but you can choose to use the fabric for the actual quilt - that is your choice. The first project we will be doing is the tote shown in the picture. It uses 4 of the blocks with the actual fabrics.

Christmas Club starts in January. The purpose of this club is to make Christmas projects throughout the year, so that you have them ready in time for Christmas. The projects work year round though, so you don't have to save them for Christmas. For the membership fee and monthly pattern fee of $6-$10.00 you will receive a free block and a Fig Tree pattern for the monthly project. There will be optional kits available for the projects. The first month we will be doing the scarf pictured in the picture. It is backed with flannel, and is very cozy. Last year we handed out the free blocks featured in the picture below. Our theme was the 12 Days of Christmas. This was only available to our 2013 Christmas Club members.

We will be re-running the My Favorite Things Block of the Month, from the Primitive Gatherings Pattern. This was very popular last year and several people have asked for it again. The monthly cost of $9.99 includes the fabric for top and binding, the wool and the pattern.

Independence is a block of the month that we had in 2013. We discovered three more spots, so we are offering it as a block of the month to anyone who is interested. The cost is $25.00 per month.

Woolen Sheep is a block of the month that starts in January. This adorable sheep made from wool, has a different wool blanket for each month. The 1st month you receive the wool for the sheep and one blanket, plus pattern. Each month thereafter for 11 months, you will receive the wool and pattern for another month's blanket.

Quilty Fun by Lori Holt has been very popular. This Block of the month is done as a row by row. Each month you will receive the fabric for one row. This quilt features fabric form Lori Holt's Riley Blake fabric lines and some fill-ins from MODA fabrics also.

PRI 427BHD 2083 We will also be running Words to Live By, from Primitive Gatherings and I Believe in Snowman by Bunny Hill Designs. Both are blocks of the months that we will post more information on in January.

We have many more programs, including a wool club that will meet the 3rd Monday of each month starting in February, Stitching Society which meets the 1st Monday of each month, a ScrapBuster Club starting in January, and a technique class that begins in February. For more information on all of the above, and more, please stop by the store.

We will be closed the 24th-26th so that we may spend time our families.
From Everyone at Stars & Scraps, we wish you a very Merry Christmas! and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Charity Sew

Meet Bode. He is the nephew of Suzanne, one of our friends, who also teaches at the store. Bode has a rare form of cancer and as you can see from his patch, has already had an eye removed. He is a 6 year old with a fighting spirit though and he wants to help other children in his cancer ward at Rady's Children's Hospital in San Diego. We want to help him by hosting a Charity Sew at the shop on December 7th. We will be making drawstring bags that will be distributed by the organization Coverswith Love. All of the information about the charity and the requirements for the bags can be found on their website Coverswithlove.com. They are looking for bags made from Christmas fabric for the bags we will be delivering thru Bode. There are very specific requirements about the fabric, ie it must be pre-washed. Please visit the website for specific requirements and instructions. If you want to join us at the shop Saturday for sewing, please call to reserve a space at no charge. We plan to do potluck and just have a great day of sewing for a cause.

We are also hosting an evening, December 5th to see lap quilts for an organization in Riverside that distributes them to the Senior centers. The quilts need to be 3 feet by 4 feet or 4 feet by 5 feet and made from new fabric. We have acquired fabric samples from a fabric store that can be used that evening for making patchwork quilts. Rag quilts would also make great lap quilts. Join us that evening. Feel free to bring any scraps from your stash.

December 7th will also be the day we reveal the new Saturday Sampler and other programs that are starting in 2014. Please come at 9AM to hear a presentation.

Mystery Quilt Weekend

We hosted a mystery quilt weekend and WOW! It was fun! The ladies arrived Friday evening to get started. They didn't know what they were making, but they had been given the fabric and cutting requirements ahead of time so they could get started. Our theme was summer picnic, and they arrived to find a summer basket with a personalized strawberry name tag on it. They also received a Creative Grids ruler and marking pen, which were important tools for the quilt. Each day they arrived to find a gift on the table for them. Mason jars, pin cushions and pinwheels.

It wouldn't be a quilt weekend without food, snacks, games and prizes! Pamala was the hostess for the weekend and she had some great games, that brought lots of laughter. While the ladies were sewing, she ran bingo games and drawings for prizes. Mystery quilts are done in steps so you don't know what your final quilt will look like until you are on the last step. Pamala would hand out steps to the ladies as they requested them. It was great to see all the different fabric selections. Each block looked so different.

Beth transformed a plain white room in to a cozy get away. And a special thanks to Sandy for the cookies and Carmel corn, and Danielle and Lanae for making banners.

They sewed all day Saturday and until 2pm on Sunday. It was a wonderful weekend, and everyone was sad when it came to an end. The good news is that today we announced our next event for March 21-23, 2014. We are taking deposits and already have 20 signed up. If you think you would like to come, call or come in soon.

We have kids camp starting this week. It will be exciting to see them learn.

Lisa from Primitive Gatherings will be here August 5th to teach one if her new wool projects. We have a few spaces left, so call the store to reserve a space if you are interested.

Later this week, there will be more information on a new Stitching club that Pamala is starting. New class additions to the schedule and more... So stay tuned.

We look forward to seeing you in the store.

More Market

We arrived in Oregon on Wednesday and stopped at some more stores. Holly Hill in West Linn is a must see if you are in town. The displays are amazing!

Thursday we started the day at a local antique mall, called Montecellos. We saw some great pieces but they don't ship so the next trip will have to be with a bigger car. Then it was on to more stores. One of them was Pine Needles in Lake Oswego.

Thursday night they have Sample Spree. The best part is being able to pre-buy some fat quarter bundles of the fabric lines we are ordering.

Friday morning the convention center opens and the fun begins. Aisles and aisles of fabric, pattern, book and notions vendors. It started at row 300 and ended at aisle 2100. We ordered and ordered and I am excited about all of the great things we will be bringing to you in the near future. Our plan is to have lots of new kits ready by the Quilt Run in June. Keep checking back for updates. Here are some of the highlights:

These two patterns were adorable! What kid wouldn't want a barn full of animals to carry around with them? We kitted this one today and expect it to be a big hit.

We brought home some of these great Halloween and Christmas stocking patterns.

Children and doll patterns were all the rage. Expect to see more of these. What girl wouldn't want to wear a matching outfit with her doll?

Can I just say, tooooo cute! We are exploring the idea of selling these sewing tables. They were very sturdy and affordable.

How can you not fall in love with MODA? We ordered Full lines from Bunny Hill, Minick and Simpson, Fig Tree and some pieces from other lines.

Ordered Nancy Halversons new line and book. All the projects are great as always.

We purchased Lots of new bag patterns and fabrics to make them.

Look for this new stitching program that Pamala will be in charge of.

We saw the new Block of the Month we are starting in October. The quilt is so beautiful in person.

Debbie from Wooden Spool designs has some great new sampler patterns and we have them all, plus lots more from her. She was a great hostess and I can't wait to visit her again.

Believe it or not, this was just a summary. We came back with lots more, including inspiration and ideas for so much more.

Can't wait to see you in the store.
